Whale Watching in Puerto Madryn and Valdés Peninsula

El Doradillo beach, situated 15 km (9.32 mi) away from Madryn, is the perfect place to watch the first whales of the season in their everyday life. These 15-m (49.21 ft) long creatures are the biggest mammals on Earth. For long hours, travellers and Madryn people alike enjoy this unique scenery. There is no other destination boasting such characteristics worldwide. In a totally natural setting, Eubalaena australis or southern right whales move around just 8 m (26.25 ft) off the coast. They arrive at Golfo Nuevo for mating and calving.

Visitors are advised to check tide tables as whales become really close to El Doradillo at high tide.

SCUBA DIVING
 
Scuba diving started in Puerto Madryn at the end of the 1950s. The city is known as Argentina's Dive Capital and is visited by local and foreign divers throughout the year to enjoy its crystal clear waters and abundant marine life. There are many diving options; either from the coast at easily accessed spots or on dive boats, through authorised scuba diving travel agents.

Several agencies provide a range of year-round diving services in Puerto Madryn. They all offer divers and adventurous travellers the possibility of exploring a series of underwater natural parks. Beginners will go down in the company of an instructor and participate in an underwater baptism, while more expert divers can sign up for guided tours.

Puerto Madryn city is also a good destination for other water sports thanks to its unique location on the Golfo Nuevo coast; windsurfing, jet skiing, sailing, etc. There are regular national and international windsurfing and sailing races attracting top-notch participants.

Punta Loma Protected Natural Area

Half-day tours may be arranged to Punta Loma, located 17 km (17 km) to the south. This reserve is the home to the South American sea lion and to a cormorant colony, which may be visited preferably during low tide hours. There is also an interpretative trail showing indigenous flora.
